What Are Mood Disorders?

Mood disorders are mental health conditions that affect a person’s emotional state, typically involving sustained shifts in mood that go well beyond ordinary ups and downs. Broadly, they fall into two groups: depressive disorders, which involve persistent low mood, and bipolar disorders, which involve shifts between low mood (depression) and elevated mood and energy, which can range from a milder form (hypomania) to a more intense form (mania). Both groups can affect work, relationships, and daily functioning, and both respond well to structured, professional treatment.

What we treat

Types of Mood Disorders

We treat a range of depressive and bipolar-spectrum conditions. The three most commonly searched for, and the focus of this section, are bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and seasonal affective disorder, each of which has its own dedicated page linked below.

  • Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder involves intense shifts in mood, activity levels, energy, and concentration, cycling between depressive episodes and periods of mania or hypomania. It includes several subtypes, Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothymic Disorder, which differ in the intensity and duration of episodes.

  • Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder, also known as clinical depression, is one of the most common mood disorders, affecting an estimated 3.8% of the global population. It involves persistent low mood and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities, with symptoms lasting two or more weeks.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly abbreviated SAD, is a subtype of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most often appearing in late autumn and early winter as daylight hours shorten. Symptoms include low mood, low energy, and irritability.

Other Depressive Conditions We Treat

We also treat other depressive presentations, including Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia), a chronic low mood lasting two or more years, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), which appears in the days before a menstrual cycle, Postpartum Depression, which follows childbirth, and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) in children and adolescents. Every treatment plan begins with a full clinical assessment so the specific condition, or combination of conditions, is correctly identified.

Our Approach to Mood Disorder Treatment

Our integrated approach combines evidence-based therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), with pharmacological support where clinically appropriate, including mood stabilisers, and holistic elements such as meditation, mindfulness, movement, and nature exposure. Rehab in Thailand for International Clients

Most of the people we treat travel to us from overseas, and we have built dedicated support around that journey. Choosing to travel for treatment puts helpful distance between you and the environment linked to your symptoms, and gives you access to accredited, international-standard care.

Our admissions team guides you through every step, from the initial consultation and clinical assessment, which take place by phone or video before you travel, through to travel, arrival, and settling in. Australian clients may also be able to access their superannuation early to fund treatment on medical grounds. Questions

Mood Disorder Treatment: Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that affects a person’s emotional state, causing sustained shifts in mood that go beyond everyday ups and downs. The two main groups are depressive disorders and bipolar disorders.

  • What is the difference between depression and bipolar disorder?

Depression involves persistent low mood without episodes of mania or hypomania. Bipolar disorder involves both depressive episodes and episodes of elevated mood and energy, ranging from hypomania, a milder elevated state, to full mania, a more intense and disruptive state.

  • Is hypomania the same as depression?

No. Hypomania is a milder form of mania, an elevated mood and energy state, not a depressive state. It is one end of the bipolar spectrum, distinct from the low mood seen in depressive episodes.

  • What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?

Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly abbreviated SAD, is a subtype of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most often appearing in late autumn and early winter. Read more on our dedicated Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) page.

  • Can mood disorders be treated?

Yes. Mood disorders respond well to structured treatment combining evidence-based psychotherapy, medical support where appropriate, and holistic care, delivered within a stable, supportive environment.

  • How long is a treatment programme?

Our residential programme has a minimum stay of 35 days. The right length depends on your individual needs and is agreed with you following assessment.

  • Can I have treatment if I am travelling from overseas?

Yes. Most of the people we treat travel to us from abroad. Our admissions team supports you through assessment, travel, and arrival, with dedicated lines for the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.

  • How much does mood disorder treatment cost?

Treatment is tailored to each person, so the cost depends on your length of stay and the level of care required. We do not publish prices online, but our admissions team will provide a clear, all-inclusive quote during a free, confidential consultation.

  • Is my treatment confidential?

Yes. Privacy and discretion are central to how we work. Your treatment, and the fact that you are receiving it, remain confidential throughout your stay and beyond.

  • How do I start?

The first step is a free, confidential conversation with our admissions team. They will carry out an initial assessment, answer your questions, and help you decide whether The Beekeeper House is right for you or your loved one.

  • How do you measure and report your outcomes?

We assess every client on arrival and reassess them throughout treatment using validated clinical measures, including GAD-7 for anxiety, PHQ-9 for depression, and CORE-10 for general psychological distress. We publish these outcome figures as measured, including the clinical thresholds they are set against, rather than an unverified summary claim.

Reaching out is often the hardest step, and we make what follows as clear and supportive as possible.

Whether you are seeking help for yourself, for a loved one, or referring a patient, our admissions team will talk you through your options with no pressure and complete confidentiality.
